Eectric toothbrushes or what we also call powered toothbrushes are the new advances slowly taking up as a replacement for the normal toothbrushes we use daily.
These electric toothbrushes were introduced in the world of dentistry to aid better in taking care of our mouth particularly teeth.
The normal toothbrushes are the manual ones which we use to give srrokes on the teeth surface to clean our teeth and remove the surface of any plaque or biofilm present.
The electric ones however provide you with the same facilities of removing all the plaque deposited on tooth surface, only difference being this powered toothbrush will do all the work for you.
How does it work?
The electric toothbrush works by charging or via battery. There are various mechanism which which these wonder wands work. Just switch it on, place it on the teeth and viola, your work is done!
1. It can work via vibrations. If you have ever gone for scaling of your teeth to a dentist, there are two ways by which that can be done. Either by manual scalers or chisels or hand instruments or by ultrasonic scaler tips. Manual scaling methods are no longer in use as it is very much time taking and also not patient compliant. Whereas ultrasonic scalers on the other hand privide you with same or infact better results with sharp tips working on the principle of vibrations.
The same principle works here too. Vibrations.
The bristles of the electric toothbrush will produce vibrations and will therefore dislodge the plaque accumulation formed on the surface of your teeth overnight. Even helps in removing the remnants of food particles struck in between your teeth.
2.The second kind of electric toothbrush are those which work via oscillatory motions. Back and forth or rotatory.
Oscillatory motion is the motion which is repeting in nature and periodic around an equillibrium position. It can also be understood as to and fro movement of the brush from its mean position. These types of brushes are also available in the market and are in high demands because of their efficiency in achieveing good dental hygiene results. The bristles in the rotatory powered toothbrushes rotate in a particular direction continuously and then in the another.
3.The sonic vibrations toothbrushes, which vibrate at the range of audible frequencies. One of the major advantages of the vibratory motions over rotation motion is that the toothbrush will have to be sweeped in only one direction throughout all teeth without having to use different angles for each tooth as required in rotatory powered toothbrush
These various types and varieties of electric toothbrushes available can be used for children for whom this new technology might seem very interesting and they will be more enthusiastic to use it. Thereby it reduces the chances of plaque and calculus formation leading to lesser gum diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis.
A major striking feature of electric powered toothbrushes is that it is costlier than those of manual regualr toothbrushes. The electric tips of the advanced toothbrushes also require replacement after a particular period of time (usually 3 months) , similar to normal manual toothbrushes. There again you will have to consider the replacement prices. So if you can afford the leap of expense compared to manual toothbrushes, it is definitely advisable to use the electric toothbrush for better results everyday.
Some of the dentists might also advice poweres toothbrushes for those patients who do not brush properly in an appropriate manner for the required amount of period.
These newer technology brushes are now widely used all over the world and encourages people to take better care of their teeth by making the entire process of brushing their teeth easier and faster. One can achieve better results in oral hygiene with powered tooth brushes than the manual one's in the same stipulated period of time they brush.
One should always remember that these electric brushes are surely better alternatives to the manual toothbrush we use daily but its not an alternative for all the measures we take for maintaining oral health collectively.
Flossing is an essential part of cleaning up debris and plaque from the tooth surfaces in unreachable/inaccessible areas . No amount of toothbrushing can replace it.
Also if visit your dentist regularly for taking home valuable pieces of advice for maintaining oral health and hygiene. If your dentist has adviced you to use your mouthwash fir a certain period of time, you should not skip it be it whatever kind of tooth brush you may use.
